History of Cerreto di Spoleto

Cerreto di Spoleto is an ancient town set on the hill of San Sebastiano, at an altitude of about 600 meters above sea level at the top of a rocky spur that separates the Vigi and Nera valleys. This is the point where the Valnerina valley begins to narrow to form a gorge between the high mountains. Its original have been attributed to noble Frankish people who came here with Charlemagne to battle the powerful Longobard Gastaldato of Ponte, which was set on the hills directly across from it. Cerreto has always been renowned as a restful vacation spot, not only because of its serendipitous location and clean healthy air, but also because of the springs located in the immediate vicinity, such as the ones in Triponzo, Sellano and Borgo, which were structured as baths and health spas since ancient times. Even today, Cerreto continues to be a renowned health resort.
